Welcome to Miss McGowan and Mrs Taylor's Year 1 Class page.

Here are some photographs of our classrooms.

Autumn Term 1  2022

Science

In Science we have been finding out what animals eat. We worked together to sort the animals into carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.

RE

We have been learning all about Harvest Festival.

We have enjoyed looking at different fruit and vegetables, spending time talking about where they come from and drawing pictures of them.

History

Year 1 have been enjoying this half term's dinosaur topic, taking part in their own fossil hunt and trying to put their dinosaur skeleton back together!

Art

In art we have been exploring colour.

We have been learning about primary and secondary colours. We also spent time adding white and black to a colour to see what happened.

Autumn Term 2  2021- Week 2

We have been learning about Remembrance and creating some beautiful poppy art.

Week 3

In Science we have been learning all about materials. We really enjoyed testing to see which material made the strongest bridge.

Week 4

We have been exploring movement in PE, travelling in different ways.

Week 5

In Design and Technology we have been designing and making our own bridges.

Week 6

As part of our Where We Live topic, we went on a school trip to Fauld's Brow. We used maps to identify different features and a compass to navigate our way.

Spring Term 1

Week 2

We have been spending time developing our drawing skills using pencils of different grades – hard to soft.

Week 3

In maths, we have using dienes to make numbers to 20 and develop an understanding of tens and ones.

Week 5

Look at our self-portraits. We are very proud of all our hard work.

Week 6

This week we looked at self-portraits by Vincent Van Gogh. We thought about how we would like to portray ourselves and the colours we would like to use.

Spring Term 2

Week 1

We have been spending time finding out all about mammals.

Week 2

Who was Florence Nightingale? Why was she an important person? We found out how she helped to improve hospital care. It was World Book Day on Thursday and an author came in to read his book to us. We really enjoyed it.

Week 3

We drew pictures of each other and then added collage to our work.

Week 4

We had a fantastic Science Week and managed to fit so much in, extending our learning about Animals and exploring the theme of growth. We visited a local farm, had some birds of prey visiting school, went out searching for signs of spring and investigated questions about how birds and humans grow.

Week 5

We celebrated World Maths Day with some problem-solving inspired by the Charlie and Lola book One Thing, by Lauren Child. We worked together using practical maths resources to make observations and test out our ideas.

Week 6

We have really enjoyed having visitors come into school to work us. Someone came to play cricket with us and someone came to do some art and craft work with us.

Summer 1

What a busy half term. Take a look at some of the things we did.

Summer 2

We really enjoyed taking part in the sports festival at our local secondary school.

We designed a printing tile, made it and then had fun printing with it.

Sculpture

We have been busy creating our own sculptures. First we gathered some natural resources from outside and combined these with some of the craft resources we already had. We then used clay and a mixture of these resources to make a sculpture.
