Welcome to Year 2!
Mrs Kingston - Sycamore Class Mrs Ross - Apple Class
Autumn Term 2
Our topic this half term is 'Sustainability' and we are going to be learning more about the wider world outside of Cumbria.
We began this half term with some poetry writing. For our inspiration, we explored our outside area on an Autumn walk. With all the wonderful colours, sounds and smells it certainly was a feast for the senses!
We were very excited to start our forest school sessions again on Wednesday and Thursday this week. Mrs MacGregor and Miss Hickman have been helping us build our confidence outdoors and we love playing games and discovering lots of Autumn treasures.
Autumn term is a fabulous time for festivals and we have looked at lots this week, from Bonfire night to Diwali. We enjoyed recreating a November 5th sky scene using pipe cleaners for printing fireworks, with glitter of course!
This week we have focused our learning around the ‘Plastic Problem’ we were shocked to discover just how big the problem is worldwide. We have designed our own posters to display in school to spread our recycling message and to be more ‘eco aware’.
We enjoyed taking part in a felting workshop with Julie this week where we used real sheep wool as our material to make an under the sea scene.
Here are some photos of the process:
This week we have been using our journals to further explore the plastic problem. We looked at a range of photographs showing the devastating affects of plastic in our ocean. We used phrases like 'I noticed', 'I wonder' and 'It reminds me' to allow us to study the photos in more detail.
Autumn Term 1
Our topic this term is 'Made in Cumbria'. We are settling in to our new classrooms well and enjoying taking part in lots of fun activities!
We began our topic work by looking at where we live and found out about human and physical features in Wigton. We spent time walking around Wigton and noting our town's special features.
It was Roald Dahl day on Thursday this week so we have been enjoying reading books like The BFG and George's Marvellous Medicine. We created some great art work and wonderful writing based on these books.
Week 2: Outdoor maths
We investigated odd and even numbers by counting in groups of 2. What better way of doing this than by using natures treasures!
We enjoyed taking part in a Multi skills festival organised by the sports leaders at Nelson Thomlinson School. We visited 15 stations set around the field and worked in teams trying a range of different skills, from hurdles to egg and spoon. We loved cheering our team mates on!
Week 3: Foraging and baking!
We had great fun in school and the parks and paths around school collecting produce to use in our recipes. We set off in search for brambles and apples for our crumble and turnovers. We were very careful with the tools and equipment back in school as we worked together to make our culinary masterpieces!
We have been enjoying taking part in gymnastics and football coaching this week. We also had a visit from a puppet theatre on Wednesday which was lots of fun!
Week 4: After School Outdoor Cooking Club
Mrs Ross, Miss Hickman and Mrs Naylor have been running an outdoor cooking club after school every Wednesday. The children have been making bread sticks, enjoying soup and popcorn all cooked on the fire! It is great fun and the food tastes fantastic!
We visited Whinlatter Forest as part of our topic work on Monday this week and took part in a range of activities. We learned about human and physical features of the land from the top of the forest with Mrs Ross. Mr Norman took us on a nature trail where we learned all about food chains and habitats of animals in the forest. Mrs Kingston took us on some team building missions where working together was the aim of the game! We even had our lunch in a yurt among the trees! What a fantastic day we had!
Our key text this half term has been 'The Town Mouse and The Country Mouse' to link in with our 'Made in Cumbria' topic. We have been planning our own version of the story based on the original. We loved hearing all of the different twists on the original story that we invented.
This week we have enjoyed our last coaching sessions with Rowan (football) and Mrs Foster (gymnastics). Lots of fantastic improvements in skills from everyone in both disciplines!
Taking learning outdoors!
Look how much learning fun we have in our fantastic gardens!
